Notebooks of Wonder

For years I have always carried a notebook with me. In it I record what, day to day, moves me in the act of telling: phrases, fragments, words, thoughts. I call these notebooks cuadernos de asombros — notebooks of wonder.

In parallel, my photographic practice turns toward what moves me in looking. The need then arises to bring both registers into relation: to connect word and image, to make them speak to each other. This is how I begin working with the photographic image as a surface for writing.

Onto the photographic image is inscribed not only text, but also the passing of time, turning it into a record of an ongoing temporality. In that always-fleeting temporality, the embroidery appears not as a decorative form, but as a way of prolonging the instant. As I write, as I embroider, the instant endures.
